Our history
In 2002 Paul Grimshaw and Matthew Josephson began acting for leaky home owners and bodies corporate at the Auckland law firm Cairns Slane. In 2005 they established a new firm, Grimshaw & Co, to provide specialist services to leaky home owners and insurance clients.
Grimshaw & Co quickly developed a reputation as the market leader in leaky home cases. The firm acted for a large number of bodies corporate and individual home owners with claims before the Weathertight Homes Tribunal, District Court and High Court. Grimshaw & Co acted on the leading leaky building cases including the Sunset Terraces, Byron Avenue and Spencer on Byron claims which proceeded to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court and created important legal precedents.
Over time Grimshaw & Co acted on other important building defect claims. These include the leading second-generation repair case, Fleet Street, and the Victopia claim in which the firm engaged litigation funders to pursue the insurers of the construction company in Australia. Grimshaw & Co acted for the body corporate in the Uptown Apartments repair scheme case, in which the Court of Appeal set out important principles for the repair of mixed-use developments.
The firm has negotiated out-of-Court settlements for body corporate clients throughout New Zealand including St Lukes Gardens, Oaks Club, Oaks Shores, Townsend, Hobson Gardens, Waterfront Apartments and Marina View.
More recently Grimshaw & Co represented the Gore St owners in New Zealand’s largest body corporate building defect trial to date.
Our team is well known for its advice to body corporate clients, its focus on construction litigation and its expertise in property disputes.
As the firm has grown our commitment to clients has remained the same – to provide high quality legal services with skill, integrity and dedication.
